Lab notebook software for Windows

Your digital laboratory notebook.

LabNote helps researchers record, organise and keep their laboratory experiments. It is a desktop app for Windows that stores each structured record on your own PC, ready to search, print or export.

  • Runs on Windows

A desktop application, not a website.

  • Stored on your PC

Experiments live in a local database on your computer.

  • Online only for lookups

Reagent and reference searches use public databases when you ask.

Features

Everything an experiment record needs, in one place.

Record

A structured page for every experiment

  • Sections for materials, apparatus, procedure and results
  • Formatted procedure text with tables, images and sub/superscript
  • Attach Office documents, PDFs and images
  • Group work into projects, and repeat or copy an earlier experiment
  • Search titles, observations and results; filter by tag or project
Calculate

Stoichiometry worked out as you go

  • Moles, equivalents and theoretical yield from your quantities
  • Draw structures and reaction schemes
  • Formula builder, periodic table and scientific calculator
  • Equations typeset properly
Look up

Reagent data and references, filled in

  • Look up CAS numbers and densities from public chemistry databases
  • Add a reference by DOI, or search by article title
Print & export

Two ways to see it, both ready to print

  • Report: the record laid out on A4 pages
  • Lab book: notebook pages on A4
  • Prints exactly as previewed, and exports to Word
Review

Send your work to a supervisor without a server

Comment threads and approval sit on the experiment itself. Share a review as a .labnote file, or through a shared folder on OneDrive, Teams or a network drive. Review files are signed, and LabNote checks each signature against the keys you have chosen to trust.

How it works

From bench to a record you can find again.

  1. Step 1

    Create an experiment

Start a new record inside a project, or copy one you ran before.

  2. Step 2

    Record the procedure

List reagents and apparatus and write the method. The stoichiometry is worked out for you.

  3. Step 3

    Add observations and results

Note what happened, attach images and files, and add references.

  4. Step 4

    Save and organise

Keep each record in its project with tags, on your own PC.

  5. Step 5

    Find it again

Search past experiments, then preview, print or export to Word.

Why LabNote

Built around the way a lab record is kept.

Paper notes get scattered across benches, drawers and years. LabNote keeps every experiment in the same structure on one machine, so the run you need is a search away.

Designed for researchers
Sections, units and calculations taken from bench work, not a generic notes app.
Organised records
Every experiment follows the same layout, grouped by project and tag.
Less reliance on paper
One digital record instead of loose sheets, and still printable when you need paper.
Easy to find later
Search past work by title, observations or results.

  • Your experiments are stored in a local database on your PC.
  • The optional reagent and reference lookups send what you look up to the public service being searched.

FAQ

Common questions

Is LabNote a web app?

No. LabNote is a desktop application for Windows, not a website. This website only describes it and will link to the download.

Where is my data stored?

On your computer, in a local database.

Does it need an internet connection?

Not for recording experiments. Only the optional reagent and reference lookups go online.

Can a supervisor review my work?

Yes. Send a .labnote review file or use a shared folder; comments and approval come back into your record. Your reviewer needs LabNote too.

Is there a Mac version?

Not at present. LabNote is built for Windows.

When can I download it?

The download link will appear on this page when the first release is published.
